Syteview uses one or more Microsoft SQL Servers and Internet Information Servers to retrieve, format and deliver data to your users’ web
browsers. These Servers can run on anything from a single computer to a large distributed network of web and database servers.
Each computer that will be running an IIS Server will have Syteview’s web server components installed. Similarly, each computer that will
be running an SQL Server will have Syteview’s database components installed on it. In the case where a single computer is running both
your IIS Server and your SQL Server both sets of Syteview components will be installed, though each set of components must be installed into a
separate directory.
During the the Syteview installation process you will be asked if you want to create a recommended set of Domain Groups that can be used to manage
user access to your data. We strongly suggest that you answer yes to this question and allow the SyteSetup program to create these groups
for you. If the computer(s) hosting your Microsoft SQL Server and IIS Server belong to an NT or Active Directory domain you will need to
create this set of recommended Global Groups on your Domain Controller before installing the Syteview components on your SQL and IIS Servers.
The easiest way to create these Global Groups on your Domain Controller is install the SyteSetup program on your Domain Controller and let it
create the Global Groups for you.
Note: The SyteSetup program is also used to install the Syteview Database and Web Server Components and will need to be installed on each
computer that will be hosting either your SQL or IIS Server.
Installing SyteSetup Program
To install the SyteSetup program, run the Install.bat program (located in the root directory of the Syteview CD). When this program is
run the first screen you see will be a welcome screen that also asks you to close any other programs that you may be running.
Close any running programs and the click the OK button to continue.
The next screen you see will allow you to specify the installation directory for the SyteSetup program. In this example we will be installing
SyteSetup into the \Syteview\SyteSetup directory on the computer’s D: drive. You can install the program elsewhere if you wish by
clicking the Change Directory button.
After you have chosen the directory you wish to install the SyteSetup program into, click the square button with the picture of the computer on it to
begin the installation process. It will take several seconds for the SyteSetup program to install, afterwhich it launch itself and you will
be presented with the following screen.
If you are using the SyteSetup program to create the Global Groups on your Domain Controller click the Begin the Installation button.
This will bring up the following screen:
Click the Create the Syteview Global Groups button and sit back while the Global Groups are created.
After the Global Groups have been create on your Domain Controller click the Exit button and you will be returned to the previous screen.
If you have just installed the Global Groups on your Domain Controller (and this Domain Controller is not also the computer that will be
hosting either your SQL Server or you IIS Server) then click the Exit button on this screen to close the program. Your next step
will be to install the Syteview SQL Server components on your SQL Server followed by installing the Syteview Web Server Components on your IIS Server.
Installing the Syteview Database Server Components on Your SQL Server
Begin the Syteview Database Server Components installation process by installing the SyteSetup program on the computer hosting your SQL Server.
When the SyteSetup program finishes installing it will launch itself and you will be presented with the following screen:
Click the Begin the Installation button to begin the installation process on your SQL Server. This will bring up the following
screen which will assist you in creating the recommended set of Local Groups on this computer.
Click the Create the Syteview Local Groups button to create the Local Groups that will assist you in managing permissions on your SQL Server.
After creating the Local Groups, your next step will be to install the Syteview SQL Server components. Checkmark the SQL Server Components
checkbox and clear the Web Server Components checkbox if it is checked and then click the Install button to begin installing the Syteview SQL
Server components.
This will bring up the Syteview SQL Server Components Installation screen.
This screen lists the five steps involved in installing the SQL Server components.
Starting with Step 1, you will specify the installation directory for the Syteview SQL Server files. In this example we will be
installing Syteview’s SQL Server components into the \Syteview directory on the computer’s D: drive. If you wish to install the Syteview
SQL Server files in another location either type the full path to that location in the text box or click the Browse button and select the desired
location from the Change Directory dialog box that appears. Once the correct location is in the text box, click the Install button
to begin the process of installing the Syteview SQL Server files.
As the SQL Server files installation begins you will be shown a dialog box that lists the location of the Syteview SQL Server installation files on the
Syteview Installation CD.
You should not have to change anything here unless the location of your CD-ROM drive has changed since you installed the SyteSetup program, so simply
click the OK button to continue. It may take a minute or two, but eventually you should see the following screen that tells you that
the Syteview SQL Server files have been successfully installed.
Click the OK button to return to the Syteview SQL Server Components Installation screen. Step 1 should now display >> DONE.
Step 2 involves connecting the SyteSetup program to the SQL Server, selecting the Syteview Administrative Account, specifying the location of the
physical database files, and finally creating the Syteview database, tables, views and stored procedures used by Syteview.
At the time you create the main Syteview database you will be able to create three other databases:
First, make sure that the Select the MS-SQL Server text box is filled in with (local). You could install Syteview on a
remote database server by filling its name in here, but in this case we are installing Syteview on the local SQL Server. Click the Connect
to the SQL Server button to actually connect the installation program to the SQL Server. Connected to: (local) should appear
directly above the button that you just clicked.
Note: Do not continue without connecting to the SQL Server.
Next you will be selecting the Syteview Administrative Account (also called a Server Login) that will be used to create the Syteview database, tables,
views and stored procedures. Clicking the Select the Admin Account button will bring an warning screen that tells that the administrative
account must already exist on your SQL Server before proceeding.
If the account you will be using already exists on your SQL Server and it has sufficient rights to create the database click the Yes
button to continue. Otherwise click No, exit the SyteSetup program, create the administrative account and then re-run the SyteSetup
program.
After you click the Yes button a list of accounts on your SQL Server will be displayed.
Select the Account that will become the administrative account for the Syteview database. In this example we will be using the
SYTECORP\SQL account.
After selecting the Syteview Administrative Account your next step will be to specify the location for the Syteview database’s physical
files. In this example we are putting them in the D:\Syteview\Data directory. If you want to put them in another location, Click the
Browse button and select the new location from the Change Directory dialog box that appears.
After specifying the location for the Syteview database’s physical database files select the version of the Progress/Syteline tables that you will be
replicating into the SQL Server
using
Note: Leave the Version field blank if you do not want to create any version specific tables.
Next, select any of the other three databases, SyteWeb, SyteShop and SyteData, that you will be using. Go ahead and
install all three if you are not sure whether or not you will be using them in the future. All together they will
take up less than ten megabytes of physical storage if you don't use them.
Finally, click the Create the Database(s) button to begin creating each of the databases you checkmarked above.
You will be shown the parameters you have just specified for the Syteview database you are about to create.
Click the Yes button to continue.
The following screen will be notify you when the empty Syteview database has been successfully created.
Click the OK button to continue.
